The A.C.E. Parent Starter Guide

7 things every parent should understand about their child's A.C.E. journey.

The central idea: A child completing academic work is important. A child learning to think, communicate, create, lead and live responsibly is the bigger goal.

1. Understand what “completion” tells you

Completion gives you useful information about progress. It does not, by itself, tell the whole story about understanding, retention or application.

2. Ask your child to explain

After a study session, ask: “What did you learn?” “Why does it work?” “Can you show me another example?” “Where could you use this in real life?”

3. Protect independence — but stay connected

Independent learning is valuable. Independence should not mean that a child struggles silently or feels that adults are unavailable.

4. Look for transfer

Real learning becomes visible when children can use an idea in a new situation. Encourage practical examples, family projects, experiments and problem-solving.

5. Develop character intentionally

Responsibility, honesty, perseverance, self-control and service require repeated practice. Academic independence should be connected to personal responsibility.

6. Build critical thinking outside the PACE

Ask children to compare options, defend an answer, find evidence, predict outcomes and explain why they changed their mind.

7. Prepare for life beyond school

Communication, digital literacy, financial awareness, creativity, teamwork, leadership and adaptability should become part of the child's wider development.

A 15-minute weekly parent conversation

  1. What was easy for you this week?
  2. What challenged you?
  3. What did you learn that you can use outside school?
  4. What are you proud of?
  5. Where do you need help?
  6. What will you do differently next week?
